So it’s winter and we are busy blogging, tying flies, skiing, and dreaming about the best hatches of next fishing season. We’ve listed a few of the Montana Fly Fishing Guides staff’s favorites. Comment on your favorites.
Eric Adams’s 3 Fav’s:
Spring Baetis – Ski in the morning, fish dry flies in the afternoon. Oh yeah no crowds. Mother’s Day Caddis – Flat out the largest hatch on the Yellowstone River you will EVER see. Giant Western Golden Stone - Yeah the one in late summer. Big fish on dries.
Eric Paramore’s 3 Fav’s: Mother’s Day Caddis – if you want to know why check out the 2nd pic in this photo gallery.
Hoppers – I spend most of the winter tying the perfect one.
Hecuba – A cool late summer mayfly.
Perry Coleman’s 3 Fav’s: Pale Morning Duns or PMD’s – I get back from Florida right in time for these guys on the Spring Creeks.
Hopper’s – I know they aren’t a ‘hatch’ but come on!
Tarpon Worm Hatch – Yeah, it’s not in Montana but neither am I, too busy guiding Tarpon in Islamorada
Dennis Alverson’s 3 Fav’s: Salmon Fly – Big nymphs, I love the Girddle Bug!
Hoppers – Rising trout, love it.
Summer Caddis – On the Boulder River.
Over the years we’ve been exposed to some unique individuals, which have spawned some equally unique questions. We thought we’d give you a heads up so your not the butt of the joke at end of the day around the guide keg. Remember this is FUN so read it in a light-hearted manner.
Top 5 Things to NOT ask your fishing guide:
5. Would you be catching fish today?
4. I just got back from Alaska. So how many 25+ inch trout am I going to catch today?
3. Guide, “Set, SEt, SET!” Client, “He never really ate it – did he?”
2. End of the day on a float trip. “Oh, there’s your truck – did we just float in a big circle?”
– also stated as “Oh, there’s your truck – is this where we put in?”
And the number one question we’ve learned has been asked to several fishing and raft guides.
1. “At what age to the Elk turn into Deer?”
If you have some great questions you’ve heard over the years we’d love to post them here.
If you haven’t heard we’ve gotten plenty of snow in the past couple weeks. Winter is off to a great start here in our part of Montana, hopefully it will continue. As of today our Montana snow pack is over 120% ! Lot’s of snow means plenty of cool water for our trout in the summer time. Keep it coming.
If feel like you’re hearing a foreign language when your fly fishing buddies get together and talk then maybe this video seems familiar. While we are not ‘Rockwell Retro Encabulator’ engineers we gotta wonder if most of those words are even real. It starts getting really good at about 50 seconds. Enjoy!
If you need any fly fishing jargon diluted please let us know and we’ll help you out – we promise to explain it better than the Rockwell Retro Encabulator spokesman.
